At the start of June, Cindy, Vicky and I fly to Kigali in Rwanda to explore this beautiful country and track gorillas.
We stay in one of Vicky's new hotels and on Friday afternoon visit the Genocide Museum, a touching reminder to the horrors of 1994.
Heading north out of Kigali we drive along ridges and valleys past stunning scenery. Every inch of land is cultivated and half the country appears to be out on the road, brightly dressed and carrying everything from food and water to grass and cabbages.
The country is so densely populated that wherever you stop kids appear from no where. We show them their photos and hand out pens (only if there are a few).
They practice their English, sing songs and laugh.
Virunga Lodge is on the top of a ridge looking over lakes Burera and Ruhondo in one direction and the chain of volcanoes that host the mountain gorillas in the other.
The Lodge is fairly 'eco' with solar power, ash loos, etc. but nevertheless very comfortable, friendly and beautifully positioned.
On our first night we are treated to a show of Intore dancing. Originally put on for the Tutsi kings, our dancers put on a fine show.
