Skeleton Coast Map
Rick and Bertus on the beachThe Schoeman family who run Skeleton Coast Safaris have been coming to this coast for 40 years.

They have a fabulous knowledge of the history, wrecks, flora, fauna and geology and we get plenty of chances to study this as we land on various beaches on the way north.

Flamingos skim the seaHelga loves to fly just above the waves and we swoop down to view seal colonies or wrecks and skim lagoons and salt farms disturbing huge flocks of flamingos.
Vicky and wreckThe Coast is famous for its wrecks but most of them don't last long. The sea, sand and wind quickly destroy the rusting hulks and often only a few steel plates show the location of a once large ship.
Diamond CampEduard BolenProspectors have been looking for diamonds here for over a hundred year. This deserted camp (left) was occupied by German prospectors between 1900- 1918. Dropped by ship they had a lonely life sifting the sands until the next ship came back. They livened things up by converting the wreck of the Eduard Bolen (right) to a brothel! Presumably it was a bit more habitable then.
ship adriftAnnita with ribWrecks are not a thing of the past - this ship was being towed away from the shore having slipped its moorings north of Swakopmund.

Meanwhile there are plenty of other skeletons on the Coast. Seal bones are plentiful along with bird and fish bones. Here Annita admires a rather fine whale rib.
