You do need to be confident in the mountains and know how to orienteer (for my beginners guide click here!) After the wild weather in the Lakes in 2008 the organisers have been particularly careful to ensure that everyone going onto the hills know what they are doing.

The 2009 Original Mountain Marathon was run in Mid Wales with check in at the Royal Wales Showground in Builth Wells. Neither Jeremy nor I know the countryside but we stay with OMM veteran David in Bristol on Friday night and arrive in Welsh drizzle in good time for the start.

You can see from the medium score map on day 1 that this is a pretty compact course but through great country with hills, water and few roads.
